hey guys, time for a bit of global awareness eh?
This is a really important petition, called the Big Noise. It protests the unfair trade practices of large countries, namely European Union and USA, onto smaller countries within Africa, Asia and Latin America.
One of them is trade dumping, where excess produce such as cotton, coffee and milk are 'dumped' onto the poorer markets of Africa etc. Thus, the market is crowded with foreign produce, and the local farmer is edged out.
"The Big Noise petition will be presented at the WTO summit in Cancun, Mexico, in September this year. The summit will see trade ministers from all over the world coming together, and will be crucial for the future of world trade, and the futures of millions across the developing world.
The Big Noise has also been mobilised to great effect through its online e-mail campaigns - most famously in December 2002 when Nestlé were forced to climb down from their decision to claim $6m from the government of Ethiopia. Nearly 50,000 e-mails were sent by Big Noise members and after just a week Nestlé retreated."
As you can see, you can actually make a difference.
So please, PLEASE join the world in this petition...takes just one second of your time.

If you have time, have a look around the site for the other campaigns...petitions to George Bush, Tony Blair etc. Also the Oxfam site is also worth a look:
www.oxfam.com
Oxfam is an international organisation (like the Red Cross) that gives aid to poorer developing countries. There are plenty of Oxfam stores in the UK and Australia, though I'm not quite sure about America. They actually buy items made by the local artists and give the proceeds back. If you ever get the chance to see one of those stores, go check it out. The stuff in there is amazing...jewellery boxes from India, cool little pyramids and mummy figurines from Egypt, rugs from Kenya etc etc. And it's not too expensive either...I mean 20 - 30 bucks for an Indian jewellery box is a pretty good deal.
But, that petition (and others) are just a click away. Go on, give a little something back to the world.
(sorry if this seems quite random...I'm not trying to make everyone feel as if they've been shallow bums all their life cos I'd be the worst one...it's just something I feel really strongly about and I'm trying to put this up on as many sites as I can)
